Celebrating Mum’s Birthday

It was no coincidence that my mum’s birthday fell smack dab in the middle of my parents’ visit to Sydney.  (Yes, I will go back to referring to her as my mom as “mom,” once I return to the states… just let me pretend I’m charming, okay? Let me have this!) We planned it that way… and wanted to make sure it was extra special.

On her actual birthday, I posted about the Top 10 Things I’ve Learned From My Mum. So her birthday started with a good cry upon reading the blog. Happy tears, people… happy tears.

Then, upon entering our Sydney dining room, she was greeted with some b-day decor courtesy of Husband and me.

I then made brunch for my parents, The Moo and myself.

We had a spinach and sausage hash topped with a fried egg…

…as well as the banana pancakes I made from that Buzzfeed Video.  I topped them with Greek yogurt, muesli and a warm berry compote.

And of course… what’s a birthday without birthday cake? Who says there can’t be cake at 9:30 in the morning? You tell me who’s saying this and I will shove a piece of birthday cake in their blabbering mouth!

I say there should ALWAYS be cake at 9:30 in the morning!!!

It was actually more brownie than cake. Nutella peanut butter brownies filled with and topped with a Nutella peanut butter frosting and peanut butter Tim Tams to be exact.

We then walked down to the ferry… and guess what? WE DIDN’T GET LOST!  And we headed for Circular Quay.

Once ashore, we walked to the Royal Botanic Gardens….

…After strolling around The Sydney Opera House and snapping a few pictures of course.

(Yes, there is a law that says you can’t pass The Opera House without taking a picture of it. If you break this law, you must battle a Hugh Jackman look alike who goes all Wolverine on your ass. It’s terrible and sexy all at once.)

We entered the gardens and were “ALL ABOARD!,” the Choo Choo Express for a 30-minute tour of the grounds.

We left Circular Quay and headed home for The Moo (and who are we kidding… all of us) to take a nap.

When Little Moo woke up, it was time for The Birthday Parade!

You know… the Birthday Parade… Oh come on… you know. It’s where you wear a cape and a crown and you blow a whistle or a horn as you march around your house in honor of someone’s birthday. And no matter whose birthday it is The Moo is the leader.

What?!?! You don’t do this at your house?!?! You’ll have to invite The Moo over! I’ll send you a quote for her services.

After the party, we all dined at the GPO wine and cheese room. The adults (minus my dad) started with a wine and cheese pairing flight… Dad went for the whiskey and cheese flight.

We then shared a cheese fondue, macaroni and cheese and a charcuterie platter. The Moo ate French Fries. Yup, the girl who will eat octopus, uni and kalamata olives, yet again wouldn’t eat cheese.

This is the same girl who gobbles up a two egg and cheese omelette most mornings.

She’s a crazy person… and we’re not sure if she’s mine.

With our bellies (overly) full…. (whose idea was it to get mac and cheese AND cheese fondue after a cheese tasting??? oh… mine. Sorry)… we headed home to pass out.

Well… after some Nutella peanut butter birthday cake of course… which The Moo also wouldn’t touch. (Same girl who will gobble up Nutella sandwiches and has a PB &J sammie daily)

.

Happy Birthday once again, Mum… what a truly fun day!

More to come,

Jessica
