What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Australia??
Ok… no, not Nicole Kidman or Kylie Minogue…
Yes, I know… boomerangs. They’re very Australian. You’re right, but not what I’m going for.
Nope, not Vegemite.
Think within the animal kingdom…
No. Not Hugh Jackman as Wolverine…
…Nor Crocodile Dundee.
Ok… I see what you did there… you thought boomerang again… because you toss ’em out and they come back to you… Very clever. But still, no.
C’mon, people… Koalas and Kangaroos!
And we got to see ’em!
We drove over to the Taronga Zoo on a Saturday morning and while the sky was pretty over-cast, the weather report said there wouldn’t be rain until Sunday.
So, off we went.
First stop: The Sky Safari Cable Car.
We thought Little Moo would enjoy taking a fun ride and getting an overview of the zoo. She was pretty much “over it,” from the moment we got on. She just wanted to see some animals.
Specifically, she wanted to hang out with Bobo.
See, Bobo is the name of the chimp in the book, “HUG,” by Jez Alborough. So, you’d think the Moo wanted to see chimps, right? Wrong. She has a stuffed gorilla whom she named Bobo (oopsies)… and she wanted to see herself some gorillas.
The gorillas were quite a ways away from where we started, but we promised The Moo we’d see Bobo by day’s end.
The first animals we got to visit… KOALAS! Ahhh!!! How exciting we were seeing Koalas for our first time EVER!!!
How… mellow. They’re pretty darn mellow. Adorable. But suuuuper mellow. I mean, they DO sleep 22-hours a day.
Oh and BT-dubs… they’re not friggin’ bears. Don’t call them koala bears. They’re marsupials! RESPECT!
Hey look… pretty view!
Next, we were off to chill with some reptiles. (“Chill”… ya know, cause they’re cold blooded). The Moo was really into them.
She really enjoyed listening to the snake handler too.
Then, we were off to see some giraffes.
They had a great view of the city.
I’m sure the property value of the giraffes’ habitat was way more than the reptiles. Location. Location. Location.
Then it was time for the Chimps… the real Bobos. (But not the Bobos we were looking for.)
Don’t get me wrong, The Moo really liked them. Especially the Mama and the baby.
Then we saw some Barbary Sheep… which the Moo kept calling goats. And in her defense, they did look goat-y… not like a goatee. Whatever, you get it.
Then we saw a Himalayan Tahr mid-mountain.
Ooh… cool view:
And then some zebras.
And a Fennec Fox. The Moo has a toy Fennec Fox at home named Fenny, but she was disappointed that this one was more interested in sleeping than chatting with her.
Then… FINALLY… it was time to see BOBO!
However, she was super nonplussed at seeing the animal. I get it. He didn’t seem that impressed with seeing us either.
She was, however, SUPER excited to see the statue of Bobo.
We finally managed to maneuver away from Bobo and saw an Elephant… and then the most exciting part of the day…
Look… the lemurs have a playground too!
Suuuuure, we’ve been to dozens of playgrounds in our day. But why go see more animals when you can play in another playground?
Well, it WAS pretty cool.
And not just “cool,” because it started raining.
But we couldn’t let that stop us. We HAD TO venture on. We couldn’t leave the zoo in Australia without seeing some frickin’ kangaroos!
So… through the rain, we saw a wallaby.
I don’t know if he got out of his enclosure or he was a paying patron, but he was closer than the rest of the animals.
And not enclosed…
Then we saw some Red Kangaroos…
…followed by Kangaroos who only faced away from us. Not sure what was with cold shoulder, but whatever… ‘ROOS!
As we headed out, a ginormous pelican flapped his wings and headed towards us.
I thought he was going to scoop up The Moo in his giant mouth. It was THAT close. But he just went along his way. Apparently pelican means leader of the ducks. (it doesn’t) because they followed his every move.
The Moo then insisted on riding the dinosaur statues.
I’m pretty sure she would have had just as much fun (possibly more) hanging out with animal statues instead of the living creatures.
We then hit up the gift shop where we told The Moo that she could pick one item (within reason) from the gift shop.
She looked around… and around… and around…
And after examining all of the adorable stuffed animals, she finally decided on… this rubber snake.
She named him Caesar Collar Caesar. And they are in love.
More to come,
